A fairly common endemic of New Zealand, Black-billed Gulls mainly breed along the braided river systems of South Island, with a few coastal colonies on North Island as well as one at Lake Rotorua. Their population appears to have been increasing in recent years and is estimated to be approximately 100,000 birds.
