In the new classification proposed by HBW & Birdlife International's Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World (2014), the formerly recognised families of Terns (Sternidae) and Skimmers (Rynchopidae) have been merged to form a superfamily under the mantle of the Laridae, a name that was previously reserved for the gulls alone.
