Spur-thighed Tortoise
Testudo graeca
Agra, Lesvos, Greece - May 2006
Napi Valley, Lesvos, Greece - May 2006
The Spur-thighed Tortoise is differentiated from the other Mediterranean Tortoises by the presence of a small spur on each thigh. In the past, the pet trade had a very significant impact on the abundance of wild tortoises but it was upgraded to a CITES I species in 1984 and since then has been fully protected by international law.
