When the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group published their 2009 (APG III) update of the recommended classification of higher plants, 3 formerly separate families (Ashodelaceae, Hemerocallidaceae & Xanthorrhoeaceae) were each demoted to subfamily status and pooled under the auspices of the Xanthorrhoeaceae family. The latest update (APG IV) published in 2016 recommends the use of the name Asphodelaceae in preference to Xanthorrhoeaceae.
