White-tailed Deer

Odocoileus virginianus

Maryland, USA - February 2000

White-tailed Deer, like many other members of the family, are very agile. They can run at speeds of up to 58kph (36mph), make vertical jumps of 2.6m, horizontal jumps of over 9m and are very good swimmers. The shafts of their hair are hollow and air-filled, which makes them extremely buoyant in the water enabling them to stop for a rest if they become tired when swimming long distances.

Maryland, USA - February 2000

White-tailed Deer are common throughout most of North America.
