The Pine Marten is found throughout most of Europe, although in Britain it is mostly restricted to the Scottish Highlands. Its population in Britain is, however, on the increase and it is recolonising areas where it had been extirpated through previous persecution. It was reintroduced to the Galloway Forest in southern Scotland in 1980-1981 and appears to have established a viable and expanding population there.
