The North American River Otter is mostly found in freshwater habitats (eg. along rivers, streams and in lakes and ponds) although they do also occur along the coasts, usually where there is a good cover of shoreline vegetation.
The are generally quite common throughout most of their range, although they are infrequently encountered due to their mostly nocturnal activity patterns.
