Common Muskrat

Ondatra zibethicus

Virginia, USA - July 2001

The Common Muskrat is a large aquatic rodent (length 0.5m; weight 1.1kg) that is never found far from water.

Virginia, USA - July 2001

They get their name from the musky odour produced by the male's preputial glands. These glands emit a secretion that mixes with the urine which is then deposited on their lodges and throughout their territories to attract females.
