Wood White / Real's Wood White

Leptidea sinapis / L. reali

Provence, France - June 2016

Wood White and Real's Wood White are extremely similar and can only reliably be identified by an examination of their internal genitalia. They can both be found flying along woodland glades and roadside verges and meadows bordering woodland where their small size and distinctive shape make them easy to separate from all other Whites. There is a third, equally similar member of the Wood White complex, Cryptic Wood White (L. juvernica), but its range does not overlap with where this photo was taken so it can be discounted in this instance.
