The Southern Scarce Swallowtail is sometimes treated as a full species, but is more usually regarded as being a subspecies of Scarce Swallowtail. Its upperwing appears paler (sometimes almost white) than that of the nominate race. In Europe, it is restricted to the Iberian Peninsula, but is more widespread in northern Africa.
