The Empididae are a large, mainly Holarctic, family with over 4000 species known worldwide. Over 200 species of these occur in Britain.

Empididae are predatory, both as adults and larvae, although adults of some species will also feed on pollen and nectar.
Empis tessellata is a common species in Britain and is often found hunting its insect prey around hawthorn blossom and umbellifer flowers.
