Similar to the closely related Calliphoridae, Flesh Flies lay their eggs on carrion, open wounds and excrement. Due to many species having highly specific preferences for the degree of decomposition and very predictable larval growth rates, they are very important for forensic determination of the age of corpses.
Due to their unsanitory habits, Flesh Flies can transmit a number of bacterial infections and diseases, including leprosy.
