Although superficially similar to mosquitoes, the phantom midges are harmless nectar feeders. In fact, many of the species do not feed at all during the adult stage of their life cycle.
Although there are only 6 species of Chaoboridae found in the British Isles, their identification is very difficult and requires microscopic examination of their dissected genitalia.
