American Black Oystercatchers are found in rocky habitats along the Pacific coast of North America, from Alaska to Baja California.
It is very similar to its South American counterpart, the Blackish Oystercatcher (H. ater), but has slightly darker legs and slightly shorter wings which do not extend to the end of the tail when at rest.
