Although not quite as abundant as its close relative the Black-crowned Night-heron, Yellow-crowned Night-herons are common in the eastern United States where they inhabit a variety of wetland habitats from coastal mudflats to riverbanks and lakeside edges.
As their name suggests, Yellow-crowned Night-herons are mostly active at night, roosting in deep cover during the day.
