Pacific Black Duck is widespread and abundant throughout Australasia and the western Pacific region, although its numbers have been drastically reduced in New Zealand due to the introduction of the more aggressive Mallard.
It can usually be found on almost any form of wetland habitat, usually in pairs or small groups.
In New Zealand, the Pacific Duck has suffered greatly from the introduction of the more aggressive Mallard, and there are now very few areas where pure-bred Pacific Ducks remain.
