Chestnut Teal is endemic to southern Australia where it is locally common but is generally only encountered in pairs or small groups.
It prefers coastal wetland habitats, such as estuaries, coastal lagoons and coastal marshes, and is less common on inland wetland habitats.
Females are very similar to Grey Teal but the crown is darker, the face a richer buff in colour and the throat and breast are more heavily speckled.
