In the new classification proposed by HBW & Birdlife International's Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World (2014), the Terns (formerly Sternidae) have been merged the Gulls to form a superfamily under the mantle of the Laridae, a name that was previously reserved for the gulls alone.
