Britain's most colourful bird has a widespread European and Asian distribution reaching as far east as New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Its favoured habitat is slow-moving rivers and streams, although it can often be seen fishing for small fish in permanently still bodies of water, such as gravel pits, ponds and lakes.
