Western and Eastern Ornate Flycatchers were formerly considered to be conspecific. The main morphological difference between the two species, apart from inhabiting separate ranges, is the uppertail colouration. Eastern Ornate Flycatcher has a uniformly orange uppertail while Western Ornate Flycatcher has black central tail retrices and duller orange, black-tipped outer tail feathers.
