Ridgway's Rough-winged Swallow

Stelgidopteryx [serripennis] ridgwayi

La Milpa, Belize - March 2014

Opinion is divided as to whether Ridgway's Rough-winged Swallow deserves full species status or if it is a non-migratory subspecies of Northern Rough-winged Swallow. Given good views, it is relatively simple to separate Ridgway's from the nominate Northern Rough-winged Swallows due to its much darker plumage and the presence of a small white patch above the bill. Ridgway's Rough-winged Swallow is endemic to the Yucatan area of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize.
