Zebra-tailed Lizard

Callisaurus draconoides

Mitry Lake, Arizona, USA - May 2006

Zebra-tailed lizards live in open deserts and arid areas in the south-western United States. They remain active in all but the hottest temperatures. To help keep themselves from overheating, they often sit with their toes curled up and only the heels of their feet touching the hot ground (as can be see in this photo).
