American Alligators were once hunted almost to extinction due to the demand for their skins.
Since it was listed as an endangered species and given legal protection in 1967 it has made a remarkable comeback and is now common throughout most of Florida. Despite its current abundance, it is still granted Federal protection due to its similarity to the rare, sympatric American Crocodile.
