Downy Emerald has a scattered distribution in Britain, with its main population centres being found south of the Thames, but also has thriving populations in the southern Lake District and Inverness-shire.
Males are often on the wing a lot earlier in the day than most other dragonflies and spend most of their time patroling the edges of ponds in a fast, darting flight which is frequently interspersed with short periods of hovering.
