Banded Demoiselles prefer slow-moving, clean water and lush emergent vegetation for breeding, since they are very sensitive to pollution.

In Britain, they have a southerly distribution reaching their northern limit in a line between Liverpool and North Yorkshire.
Some of the subspecies in southeastern Europe have more extensive blue areas on the wings of the male with only a very narrow clear band at the tip of the wing.
