The treehoppers are characterised by their extended pronotums that form a kind of "hood" over the rest of the thorax and abdomen. Many of the 3200+ species found worldwide have bizarre protruberances to their often thorn-shaped bodies. There are only 3 native British species, plus one introduced North American species, the Buffalo Treehopper (Stictocephalus bisonia), which has become established in southern England.
