Of the 3500 species found worldwide, only 10 occur in Britain. The vast majority of the known species are either predatory or carrion-eating scavengers and a few species have been found to be useful for a possible use in biological control due to their predation of bark beetles. Some species are primarily pollen feeders and may be important in the pollination of orchard fruits.
