Although classified as a shorebird, the American Woodcock is both physically and behaviourally adapted to life in damp woodlands. It breeds primarily in the northern Midwest and northeast of USA and southern Canada and winters in the southeastern United States. Maryland is near the southern limit of its breeding range, where it also winters in small numbers .
