Chestnut-mandibled Toucan is a subspecies of Yellow-throated Toucan (R. ambiguus). It is often treated as a separate species but, due to evidence of interbreeding in the contact zones and generally similarities between the two with regards to voice, behaviour and appearance, it is better treated as a race of Yellow-throated Toucan.
