The Mallee Ringneck is sometimes considered to be conspecific with Port Lincoln Parakeet (B. zonarius), with whom it forms a parapatric pair. Its taxonomic status is still under debate as recent molecular studies were inconclusive.
They inhabit mallee scrub, open woodland and wooded riverbanks and feed on fruits, seeds and flowers from a variety of trees and grasses.
