American Black Duck

Anas rubripes

Ontario, Canada - May 2000

American Black Ducks have suffered a significant decline over the last Century, with the wintering population in Maryland decreasing by 75% between 1950 and 1980.  The reasons for the decline are manifold, but are mainly linked to habitat destruction, pollution, hunting pressure and hybridisation with Mallards.
