Common Predatory Bush-cricket

Sago pedo

female - Lesbos, Greece - April 2006

As well as being Europe's largest insect, growing up to 17cm long, Sago pedo is also unusual in having its population consisting entirely of females. Since there are no males, they reproduce solely by parthenogenesis, laying unfertilised eggs that are all clones of their mother.
