Eristalis tenex is commonly called the Drone Fly due to its close similarity to male honeybees. It is one of Britain's commonest hoverflies and is one of the few species that has been recorded in every month of the year due to the female's habit of hibernating in houses and other sheltered crevices and emerging on warm winter days.
