Ring-necked Pheasants were introduced to Europe from the Far East in the Middle Ages, and by the 15th Century it was common in Britain. It is a very popular gamebird and huge numbers are released into the wild every autumn to supplement the wild stock for "sport" shooting. Each year it is estimated that about 12 million Pheasants are shot in Britain during the hunting season.
