Great Tit

Parus major

Nottinghamshire, England - January 2017

Great Tits are an excellent example of observable evolution in action. A report published in the respected journal Science in October 2017 provided evidence that Great Tits in the UK have rapidly adapted to the widespread use of garden bird feeders over the last 40 years and now have longer bills than Great Tits on the continent, where supplementary winter bird feeding is not as common. By having longer bills, the British Great Tits are able to feed from mesh peanut feeders more easily, greatly enhancing their chances of survival through the winter and it may be one of the main reasons for the steady increase in the Great Tit population since the 1960's.

The Great Tit is one of the commonest woodland birds in the British Isles and is found practically everywhere there is suitable habitat (i.e. woodlands, hedgerows, bushy scrub, suburban gardens, parkland etc.).
