Scotland is at the southern limit of the breeding range of this circumpolar species, reaching as far south as the Mull of Kintyre although the majority of the Scottish population is found in Shetland, Orkney, the Outer Hebrides and the northwest Highlands.
The most recent estimates put the Scottish breeding population at around 1500 pairs, with over 400 of these on the Shetland Islands.
