This very successful species has undergone a massive range expansion over the last 70 years, spreading from its original homelands in southern Asia through Asia minor, parts of north Africa and most of Europe.
The first recorded breeding in Britain was in 1955. Since then it has rapidly spread throughout the country and is now one of Britain's commonest birds.
