Common Shelduck are a predominantly coastal species, preferring muddy and sandy estuaries, such as those found in the Firth of Forth in southeast Scotland where internationally important numbers congregate in the winter.
They also breed in quite good numbers around the coasts of Britain, usually making their nests in disused rabbit burrows.
