The year got off to a cold start, with all the ponds and lakes at Attenborough reserve frozen over. This gave the resident foxes the opportunity to travel around the readbeds and marshes on the surface of the thick ice.
There were at least 5 Bitterns present on the reserve in January, with them regularly being seen walking on the ice at the edge of the reedbeds.
The above photo shows how beautifully camouflaged Bitterns are when sitting in a reedbed. This bird was only a few inches from the edge of the reeds but its cryptic plumage rendered it practically invisible.
The reflections from the reedbeds provided a beautiful orange glow to the water and gave the perfect background for photographing ducks on.
